Health insurance concept.

Choosing the right level of health insurance cover can be a difficult thing to do. There are so many different plans, and each one comes with a different level of coverage, with some including health and wellness resources, others that don’t and some that include day-to-day medical expenses and of course, those that don’t. Basically, the level of health insurance cover you need depends on your stage of life and you should choose a level that adequately covers what is important to you at this stage. If you are completely at a loss as to how much health insurance cover you need, read on and everything should become that little bit clearer.

Single person, no children

If you’re a single person with no young children you should choose a level of health insurance that provides accommodation in a semi-private room in a public hospital at the very least. If you would prefer a little more privacy, you can opt for a plan that provides you with a private room and depending on your lifestyle and general health, you may want to choose a plan with a level of out-patient services as well as GP services.

Family with young children

As above, you should choose a level of coverage that provides you and your family with accommodation in a semi-private room in a public hospital at a minimum. Again, you can opt for private rooms or private hospital cover if that is what you would prefer. With a young family, you can be sure that there will be many trips to your local GP so a level of cover against the cost of such visits is recommended. Maternity cover will also be a consideration for you at this stage and you may like to choose a plan that covers you towards the cost of your consultant, antenatal scans and the likes.

Family with older children

The main difference between the level of cover that’s required by a younger family and one with older CHildrenchildren is that the latter may not need cover towards day-to-day medical expenses and maternity cover won’t be as big of a consideration either. At this stage, as a family with older children, more emphasis should be placed on coverage for outpatient procedures such as MRI scans and other consultants’ services.

Older person

An older person who is looking for health insurance has different requirements again. At this stage of life, one may be most interested in getting a high level of care in a private hospital for a range of illnesses as well as cover against GP visits and other day-to-day medical expenses. Cover for orthopaedic procedures may also be important.

Don’t be confused by the sheer number of health insurance plans out there. With a little careful thought about your needs and expectations at your particular stage in life, you can choose a level of health insurance cover that perfectly suits your needs, for now and well into the future too.
